Latex Thesis Style File

A latex thesis style file is available from the Office of Graduate Education via the webpage: (last updated September 19, 2012).

However, this does not number the tables correctly. We have a version available, that works properly: thesis.cls.

Some notes on refinements to the style file are given below. These are due to Cindy Hui, who obtained her doctorate from RPI in DSES in 2011, and her Math/CS BS from RPI in 2006. Note that refinement (1) has been implemented in the thesis.cls file linked above.

1) The bug in the template that affects the page numbering for the front
matter. The page number for "List of Tables" and "List of Figures" appears
off by one in the Table of Contents.

To fix this, you'll have to do the following:
Open thesis.cls and change lines 268-271 from:

\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{\listfigurename} % add lof to toc <---
\chapter*{\centering\listfigurename % center it

\chapter*{\centering\listfigurename % center it
\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{\listfigurename} % add lof to toc <---

and change lines 288-291 from:

\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{\listtablename} % add lot to toc <---
\chapter*{\centering\listtablename % center it

\chapter*{\centering\listtablename % center it
\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{\listtablename} % add lot to toc <---

2) If parts of your dissertation has already been published or will be
published, then you'll need to add a footnote to the first page of that
chapter. This is necessary if you had signed a copyright agreement for the
journal where the work had appeared.

To do add the footnote...
Add the following line to rpithes.tex:

And in the chapter, add one of the following, whichever is appropriate,
along with the citation:

\let\thefootnote\relax\footnotetext{* This chapter previously appeared as:
\let\thefootnote\relax\footnotetext{* Portions of this chapter previously
appeared as: ...}
\let\thefootnote\relax\footnotetext{* To appear in: ...}
\let\thefootnote\relax\footnotetext{* ... (In Press)}

Note that the references listed as footnotes should also be listed in the

Celia told me that they might/will do a google search to check if parts of
your text has been published.

3) For your REFERENCES or LITERATURE CITED, if you cite a URL, you must
include the "Date Last Accessed, mm/dd/yyyy" in the citation. If you're
using bibtex, you can manually add that in the \note{...} field.
Also, if you use the \url{...} field, your URL might appear in a different
font in the citation. The graduate school doesn't like that. So instead, I
put the URL in the \note{...} field as well.

For example:
Title = {LookyTasty},
Note = {URL [Date Last Accessed,

(Shameless plug for a blog I like)

4) Also make sure that your REFERENCES appear consistent and complete. Celia
told me that it's one of the things that they look for while reviewing the

5) Another thing about the template:
If you'd like your captions to be indented and bold, then use the following:

% To restore bold, also include the second line below.
\usepackage[hang]{caption2} % to indent subsequent lines of captions
\renewcommand{\captionfont}{\bfseries} % bold caption (needed with caption
% package to restore boldface.)
Otherwise, leave it commented out.
